An overlooked corner of West Texas is believed to contain billions of barrels of newly-discovered shale oil. Apache revealed the huge find this week after more than two years of stealthily buying Guffey's company became the largest oil producer in the state during the boom period. Standard Oil initially chose not to become directly involved in oil production in Texas, and instead formed Security Oil Company as a refining operation utilizing Guffey-Gulf and Texas Company as suppliers.

The oil is in four layers of shale under desert and is part of the Permian Basin area below West Texas and southeast New Mexico. It sits under land controlled by several energy companies. The largest oil deposit ever discovered in the country was found in Texas. The USGS says an estimated 20 billion barrels of oil and 1.6 billion barrels of natural gas liquids lie in that area. Texas is an undeniable powerhouse in oil production. Last month, the Lone Star State's daily output hit 4.3 million barrels per day. Put it this way, if Texas was admitted to OPEC today, it would be the oil cartel's second-largest producer. Only the Saudis would be able to extract crude at a faster pace. Geologists say a new survey shows an oilfield in west Texas dwarfs others found so far in the United States, according to the US Geological Survey. The agency says the so-called Wolfcamp shale in Texas contains 20 billion barrels of oil and 16 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that are recoverable by hydraulic fracturing and other means.
