Charts in indesign

In part 1 and part 2 of this (rather extended) series on creating an organization chart, or a flow chart, I covered making the frames and aligning them. Now it’s time to put ’em together with lines. I recommend that people draw as few lines as possible in a flow chart. I have a client who would love to be able to update a created inDesign file with new numbers when they come in. One way I can think of is just setting up an Excel file with the charts/graphs in it pulling data from the worksheet, and then they just copy/paste the chart/graph into the inDesign file.

Dwaynie: I do charts in Illustrator for InDesign documents all the time - and I easily update them from issue to issue, and from change to change in the current issue. The secret is: DO NOT DELETE THE DATA. If you want/need to fiddle with the artwork and the data won't let you, then copy the chart then break it up.

In this case, if you drag to create only one row, InDesign will resize the new row, if necessary, so that it’s tall enough to contain text.
